This gluten free apple crumble tart has a beautiful pie crust filled with cinnamon apples and topped with a gluten free crumble topping. It is such a comforting dessert to have when those darker nights come in and always a regular fall bake. It feels so satisfying to have topped with ice cream or my favorite hot custard.

Instructions
How to make gluten free pie crust
You can use a store-bought ready made pie crust for this recipe. I used my gluten free shortcrust pastry which I have linked above and followed the steps for blind baking the gluten free pastry case.
If you prefer you could also use ready-made gluten free pastry.
How to make gluten free crumble
In a large bowl mix together the flour and xanthan gum.
Add cold butter to the flour and rub together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Mix in the sugar until evenly combined and set aside while you make the filling.
How to make apple pie filling
Place your sliced apples in a bowl.
Add the sugar to the apples and mix until all the apple slices are coated with the sugar.
Add the cinnamon and lemon juice to the sliced apples and mix until the apples are fully coated.
How to assemble apple crumble tart
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4
Place the prepared sliced apples evenly into your pre-made gluten free pastry. Spread them evenly within the pie dish.
Then with the gluten free crumble mixture that you prepared earlier, with a large spoon gently spoon the crumbs and cover the layer of apples evenly.
Carefully place the pie dish in the center of the oven for approx 35-40 minutes until the crumble is golden brown.
You will know when the pie is ready when using a knife it slides easily through the apples. If the pastry crust is browning too fast in the oven you can cover the edges with foil to prevent it from browning further.
Notes
Can I make it dairy free also?Yes, to make a gluten dairy-free apple pie you can substitute the butter for your preferred dairy free butter block.
Can I make this pie in advance?Yes. I have made this 2-3 days in advance. Store in a container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can reheat the tart in the microwave or place it back in the oven until warm. Cover with foil if placing in the oven to prevent the pastry from browning further.
Is the apple crumble tart suitable for freezing?Yes, Once cooled place in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Defrost at room temperature and reheat in the oven until warm.
