Why we love this recipe
- Easy to make - As there is no baking involved makes this is a quick and easy treat.
- Perfect for Kids - The kids will love getting creative decorating the apple slices and they make the ideal kid's party food.
- Fun Halloween activity - Set up a tray with different edible decorations and toppings for a fun and creative activity.
- Gluten free - They are also easily made Dairy free or vegan just by using Vegan or dairy free chocolate.
Ingredients notes
- Apples - You will want to use a firm apple as softer apples may not hold up well once the sticks are inserted into the apple slices. I used Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples when making the apple slices. The granny smiths have more or a tart-like flavor and the Honey crisp apples are slightly sweeter.
- Chocolate - You can use your preferred chocolate as this will work well with Dark, Semi sweet, or white chocolate. I used milk and white chocolate being sure to check that the chocolate used does not contain any gluten ingredients.
- Topping Decorations - You can use your preferred toppings for the desired look. I used melted white chocolate to make a spiderweb and mummy design then added candy eyes. Any Halloween-themed toppings will look great. If you are following a gluten free diet always check that sprinkles and candy toppings are gluten free. - Dairy Free - Use dairy-free chocolate if you require dairy-free or vegan chocolate apples.
- Caramel Apple slices - You can easily use this method to make caramel apple slices using your favorite caramel recipe.
- Chocolate Covered apple - You can cover the whole apple with chocolate if preferred instead of making apple slices dipped in chocolate.
Step by Step Instructions
Below is a brief step-by-step process with photos of how to make chocolate apples for Halloween. See the recipe card below for more detailed recipe instructions.
Step 1: With a sharp knife carefully slice the apple into ½" slices and remove the stem and any seeds from the core.
Step 2: Place the sliced apples onto some kitchen paper towels and dry off any moisture or juices. Making a small hole at the bottom of the sliced apple gently insert the stick.
Step 3: Place the chocolate in a bowl and melt either in the microwave in short bursts stirring in between to ensure the chocolate doesn't burn.
Step 4: Carefully dip the apple slice into the melted chocolate until fully coated. Gently tap the stick on the side of the bowl to allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
Step 5: Place the chocolate covered apple slice onto a lined baking sheet and decorate as desired before the chocolate sets.
Step 6: Repeat until all slices have been coated and decorated. Then place the refrigerator to set.
Notes: Dry off the apple slices with paper towels as you will want the towel to absorb any excess moisture or juices before they are dipped in the chocolate. As this will help the chocolate to stick to the apple slices better so you don't want to skip this step.
To make a spider web design draw a spiral with melted white chocolate and using a wooden toothpick from the center of the apple slice gently drag it out to the edge of the apple and repeat all the way around the spiral for the desired effect.

For a 3D Mummy design drizzle lines of melted white chocolate over the set dark chocolate and add edible eye candies. Alternatively, you can drizzle melted white chocolate over the dark chocolate before it sets as seen in image 5 in the recipe steps above which creates a flatter finish.
