These gluten free sausage rolls are the perfect party food to add to any buffet table. This recipe has been kept simple and they can be put together and ready to serve in 30 minutes. They can also be made in advance to take along to any event or picnic.
Growing up I remember mini sausage rolls were always a popular choice for party food or gluten free picnic snacks as they can be eaten hot or cold.
I just had to share my gluten free sausage rolls recipe as it is so easy and it can be adapted to suit your preferred size of sausage roll or add in additional ingredients for your desired flavors.
I used ready-made puff pastry but you could use homemade puff pastry if preferred. If like me you love the convenience of using ready-made pastry when short of time you might also like my Tomato tart with puff pastry, steak bake, or giant pop tart recipe.

Ingredients
- Pork sausage meat - At the time of photographing I used pork sausages. Always be sure to check that the sausage meat or sausages used are gluten free as some brands may include ingredients containing gluten. See my is sausage gluten free for more information.
- Gluten free puff pastry - I used a ready made Jus rol gluten free puff pastry sheet. You can use your preferred puff pastry or homemade puff pastry.
- Egg - Used for egg washing the pastry. You can use milk if you require the sausage rolls to be egg free.
- Sesame seeds - Optional
See the recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas mark 7
- In a large bowl using your hands separate the sausage meat slightly so it isn't too compact. If using sausages separate the sausage meat from the skin and discard the skin.
- Layout the puff pastry sheet on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- After you can cut your pastry sheet to size. Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the edges of the puff pastry around 1cm.
- Using half the sausage meat shape into a long sausage log shape down the center of the pastry. Then repeat with the other half of the sausage meat on the second pastry strip.
- Carefully fold the pastry sheet over the sausage meat and then roll until all the sausage meat has been encased by the pastry. Firmly pressing on the edge of the pastry to seal.
- With a sharp knife cut the log into even-sized sausage rolls. I made mini sausage rolls of around 4cm each but you can cut to your preferred size.
- Gently score the top of the pastry with a sharp knife without going right through the pastry.
- Brush all the pastry with egg wash and then sprinkle over the sesame seeds.
- place in the oven for around 20 - 25 minutes until the pastry has risen and is golden brown in color.
Hint: I used jus-rol gluten free pastry sheets which are 35cm x 23cm in size. I cut the pastry sheet in half to make two long pastry sheets that measure approx 35cm x 11.5cm.
Substitutions
- Egg free - To make this recipe egg free substitute the egg wash with milk. It may result in the sausage rolls not looking as golden brown but will still taste delicious.
- Vegan - use meat free sausages to make the gluten free vegan sausage rolls. Brush the pastry with dairy free milk such as Almond milk. This will make them suitable for a gluten free, vegan and vegetarian diet.
Variations
I have kept this recipe simple but there are many variations and I have included some of my favorites below for you to try.
- Large sausage roll - You can easily change the size of the sausage roll to make it larger and is perfect to make ahead for lunchtime. Just cut the sausage roll to your preferred size.
- Sausage & Onion filling - To make caramelized onion sausage rolls. Dice a large brown onion and fry in a non-stick pan until soft and then mix into the sausage meat before placing on the pastry sheets.
- Spices - Add your favorite spices through the sausage meat to give your sausage rolls a spicy kick.
- Shortcrust pastry - If you prefer shortcrust pastry sausage rolls. Use your preferred gluten free shortcrust pastry in place of the puff pastry to make sausage rolls with shortcrust pastry.
