There's something undeniably magical about a rich, creamy Thick Chocolate Milkshake. Whether you're sipping one on a sweltering summer day or treating yourself to a little indulgence, this timeless classic never fails to satisfy your sweet cravings.

Making a homemade chocolate shake only requires a few simple ingredients and is ready in under 5 minutes!

Two chocolate milkshakes in tall glasses topped with whipped cream and chocolate chips.

Creating homemade milkshakes has been a bit of a theme this summer in my house. We have tested lots of milkshakes from classic flavors like this chocolate shake, Banana milkshake, strawberry shake, and also a Nutella milkshake.

When trialing this chocolate milkshake recipe we tested various ratios with or without chocolate sauce or cocoa powder and felt that we came up with the perfect balance of chocolate flavor, thickness, and texture.

⭐ Why we love this recipe

There are so many reasons to love this thick, creamy chocolate milkshake that I have included a few below.

    • Only 5 ingredients - If you're a chocolate and ice cream lover, it's likely that you already have all these ingredients in your pantry.
    • Ready in under 5 minutes - This indulgent chocolate milkshake is prepared in the blink of an eye. Get ready to indulge in your chocolate cravings while cooling down on a hot day.
    • Full chocolate flavor - This recipe includes chocolate sauce and cocoa powder for a full chocolate experience.
    • Gluten Free - Use gluten-free vanilla ice cream, and if needed, you can effortlessly create a dairy-free version (Refer to substitutions later in the article).
    • Adaptable recipe - This is easily adaptable to include extra flavors or adapt to your preferred thickness. I have included everything you need to know below.

    📋 Ingredients Notes

Labeled ingredients for chocolate milkshake recipe.
    • Milk I used whole milk but you can use dairy free if required. You can substitute whole milk with almond milk, soy milk, or any other non-dairy milk of your choice.
    • Vanilla Ice Cream  Be sure to check that the ice cream is gluten free. You can also opt for dairy free ice cream if required.
    • Vanilla extract - Vanilla extract enhances the overall flavor, sweetness, and aroma of a thick chocolate milkshake.
    • Chocolate Sauce - Chocolate sauce adds richness, sweetness, and an extra layer of chocolate flavor to the milkshake. You can also swap out the chocolate syrup with Nutella, peanut butter, or caramel sauce for unique flavor profiles. Or see my Nutella milkshake if you are a fan of Nutella.
    • Cocoa Powder - Cocoa powder intensifies the chocolate flavor and adds depth to the milkshake's taste. I used Dutch processed cocoa powder but you can use your preferred cocoa powder or experiment with different types such as Natural Cocoa Powder, Black Cocoa Powder, or Flavored Cocoa Powders.

See the recipe card below for ingredient measurements.
